First boat, supra vs Malibu

Postby Tfinn88 » Wed Aug 13, 2014 8:02 am

Hi guys, I'm just starting out wakeboarding and I guess you could say I've caught the bug. I'm hooked, so as a result I'm looking at buying my first boat. Just intrested into guys opinions on what would be a good boat first up. My budget is around the 50-55k. Would be good to note my missus is a mad skier so would need to suit both. I've come down to two boats. An 08 supra launch 20ssv (179 hrs 49,900) and a 07 Malibu vlx wakesetter (210hrs 55,000) Although I prefer the supra I've been told the wake they put out will kick me around and throw me out of shape. If anyone has info on engine life and service cost that would be great too. Cheers

Its likely that they both have an Indmar engine so no difference there. It basically comes down to personal choice and the condition of each boat. They can both make a massive wake when trimmed correctly. The Mal will probably be easier to sell if you ever decide to upgrade or get sick of it.

Bud, unless she is wanting a boat to run thru a slalom course, the VLX will serve her fine. We just fill the nose ballast tank n that keeps the nose down.

The wake on the 08 Supra will be whatever you want it to be by setting the ballast and the wake plate. Fill up the ballast and lift the plate and yes the wake will boot you. I had an 05 and pretty much ran it with a full front ballast and the plate up - this was fine for me.

Neither will be a good ski boat. You can try to tune the ride with ballast or the wake plate, but they are both boat designed for wakeboarding. You will always have a meaty wake.

Best thing to do is try them out, especially ensure the skiers in the family are happy with the wake. If they just steer around on the ski, then it will probably be okay, but if you like to swerve hard then its pretty hard to control crossing the wake.

Maybe shop around a little more, try some Nautiques or a centre-mount Malibu.

Id check out the vtx setter aswell, i previously had one and had no problem running through the slalom course behind it, had a nice wakeboard wake to go with it

Maybe something a little smaller might suit your skiing other half.

We have a VTX with the Diamond hull. SKi wake is great at 32mph +

The wakeboarding wake, well thats pretty decent, particularly if your still starting out!!
