KX250F or YZ250F

Postby batty » Mon Sep 30, 2013 9:26 am

Hi Guys looking at buying a new 250f bike but having trouble deciding between the KX250f and YZ250f.

There is stuff all difference in price.

I started out just looking at the YZ but after reading up and speaking with a couple of mates who have the KX they love it.

I havent owned a bike it about 15 years so the extra speed of the KX its a major thing at the moment, the bike will be used for a bit of everything

Pros and cons as i see it are

YZ250f
* lighter
* extremely reliable
* easier to fix

KX250f
* more power
* Fuel injected

Any help appreciated

i cant give much advice at all.

What i can say is that every kg of weight makes a huge difference.
I would take the lighter bike for sure.......
however... fuel injection is nice.

I would say long term the yamaha will hold better value.
Kwakas seem to plummet in price quick.

my other advice is that if you havent ridden in a long time, just make sure those first rides back are at your pace and at
your limits, or else it can end badly. The last thing you want to be doing is chasing better riders and find yourself on your limit
for prolonged periods.

Hey Batty, what will most of your riding consist of, either of those bikes would make wicked track bikes, but if bush riding, I would consider 450's, or the newer 350's

g-mantrix.....i will be doing a bit of everything.

I just bought a pee wee for my little boy so a lot of riding will be on peoples property and on a track so i can do it with him.

I would like to do some bush riding but that will be down the track.

Anything more than a 250 scares me at the moment.

i felt one of my mistakes was jumping straight onto a 400. It has taken me a while to feel that I am finally controlling the bike.
I constantly felt the bike was about to bite me as it is so snappy on the throttle. And sure enough it did.

Batty, My boy and I have been mucking around out at Pretty Pine (north Deni side).
My boy is on a little KTM 50 and it gets around ok out there. It is like an informal motocross fun park / with a slight enduro feel.
It is pretty cool. I have heaps of fun out there.
Let me know if you want to meet up out there one day.

Thats what I'm afraid of simba....I would rather out grow the bike than it bite me hard.

I went out and checked out the old BMX track a couple of weekends ago which will be ok for him once he gets his confidence up but pretty pine sounds good.

I just need to get the little fella more confident....he is just still a bit scared of the bike and i dont want to push him too hard a scare him off....he loves it while its not running... lol

yeah ok cool.
When you get going with the little fellow a bit more, pretty pine is a better place to muck around. Just more area and
it is excepted that people ride in that spot, reg or no reg.

Howdy Batty,
I've owned both bikes in question, and i'd go the YZ! Dunno what your budget is. But 07 onwards they go the allow frame and a few geometry changes.

The YZ feels lighter, and not that the KXF isnt reliable, but the YZF 250 motor is one of the most proven water cooled moto motors out there!
Although both MX bikes, the KXF just wants to race so much more, a pig in first gear and wouldnt be as fun trying to stay in first gear following the young one.

I had a 07 YZ and a 05KXF Both carby, I now ride a 2011 350sxf and can appreciate the fuel injection. But its not really a major selling point for me.

Phil

EDIT: Everytime i mention YZ ^^^ i mean YZF obviously

YZ will have a much higher resale most of the time.

I just sold an 07 YZF and an 11 CRF and only got $500 more for the CRF and it took an extra month to sell. The KX appears to have a lower resale again based on prices on bike sales etc.

Im looking at brand new...Both are within a couple of hundred $ of each other so cost doesnt really come into it..... Probably the biggest worry for me with the YZ is that the 2014 is fuel injected which could mean that the '13 could drop big time in value...or if the new motor is a flop it could go the other way i guess.

Im leaning towards the YZ because i know its bullet proof and i dont need to extra power at this stage.....even tho i think the KX is a better bike in general.

If your scared of the power of a 250 at the moment. Your never going to notice the difference in bikes.
Mates have bought newish bikes before and then were to scared to drop or downed them. Not sure what your mentality is but for a first bike a new one is a waste. Buy a $3500 2008-10 model 250. Drop it, crash it, slide it down hill climbs, break it, crush radiators, snap fenders. After a year re learning buy the new bike. Then you will appriciate it more!
The new bike will depreciate 3k in the first year anyway.

No point being all show and no go :p As mentioned previously. Yamaha holder their value.

Having owned a few bikes with some of them have been yamaha's. They are indestructable. Wr400 99, YZ250f 02, YZ450f 11
All great bikes. Injected 450 is a pain to start compared to the older carb models but it has a lot more power. Inj costs a lot more to maintain too if you do a fuel pump etc

Iam a huge honda fan but out of the 2 your looking at i would go the yamaha. The kawasakis motor is better for race purposes but the yamaha is more reliable long term. The other thing with the kxf is all the small things break or wear out easily, the chain and sprockets as well as the fwd and rear chain guide/sliders are made out of chocolate and last 5 minutes and with alot of black plastic parts on them they can look pretty shabby quickly. Why not look at a wrf250? If i was just cruising around with my son i would be looking at one of these.
